What To Do With Infant Flaking Skin And Cradle Cap

Most infants, if not all, have a little flaking skin or cradle cap after birth. A virgin olive oil rubbed into the dry spot can solve the problem. If your using olive oil, repeat the treatment twice per day for 4 days.

If your infant has cradle cap, or seborrheic dermatitis, that persists after the olive oil treatment, I have a good herbal remedy you can try! Only one of my littles had a slight cradle cap look and this recipe worked just fine. Before moving to an herbal remedy, make sure you are using a light soap on your child's hair instead of using a baby shampoo with harsh chemicals.

Comfrey Herbal Rinse

This rinse is great for relieving the itchiness and dryness usually caused by cradle cap. This comfrey rinse is great for putting moisture back into the skin, soothing the itch and promoting tissue regeneration. Comfrey turns into a mucilage when its boiled. This makes it feel like okra or lotion. Comfrey is found in health food stores.

Recipe

1 quart water

2 ounces cut, dried comfrey root

Washcloth

  1. Add the water and comfrey to a pot and bring to a boil.
  2. Now, simmer the root for 20 minutes. Once finished, strain the root pieces and discard, keeping the remaining brew.
  3. Cool the rinse before use. Refrigerate the rinse in between uses and warm it to skin temperature before each use. Can be kept up to 4 days.

How to apply

Dip the cloth in the warm rinse and gently pat onto the infants scalp. Let the rinse air dry on the scalp. Perform this once a night for up to 2 weeks.
